INTERNATIONAL PAPER, ANDROSCOGGIN MILL, LANDFILL CLOSURE

This project located at the International Paper, Androscoggin Mill in the town of Jay, Maine, is a 35 acre landfill consisting of residual waste materials produced during the production of high gloss paper at the aforementioned adjacent paper mill.  Geosynthetic closure of the landfill is being performed in a series of construction projects when sections of the disposal area have reached capacity.  The closure projects consist of a Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL)/ Low Linear Density Polyethlylene (LLDPE) geomembrane liner system, followed by the placement of drainage and cover soils, and finally vegetative stabilization.

Duffield Associates has been onsite performing geosynthetic quality assurance inspection for the initial four (4) closure projects on the west and north sides of the landfill having a combined area of approximately 17 acres.  Working closely with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MDEP) and the design engineering firm, Duffield Associates performed on site inspection of the installation of the geosynthetic materials along with inspection of the manufacturing processes of the geosynthetic materials themselves, thru visits to the respective plants of all of the materials used.  Duffield Associates also managed the quality assurance testing of the geosynthetic materials thru other third party testing firms to confirm that the geosynthetics were made to project requirements.  Upon conclusion of the geosynthetics installation portion of these projects, Duffield Associates compiled and wrote an as-built certification report for the geosynthetics installation for review by the MDEP, to certify that installation of the geosynthetics was performed according to site design specifications and MDEP regulations.
