UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE LAIRD CAMPUS, DORMITORY & PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Duffield Associates was retained by the University of Delaware to provide geotechnical and construction review services for the multi-phased reconstruction of the dormitory areas in the Laird Campus at the University of the Delaware.  The project involved the phased demolition of 12 existing 3-story dormitory buildings, and the construction of 4 new multi-story dormitory structures.  The project also involved construction of a new stormwater management pond, new pavement areas, new recreational facilities including tennis courts and volleyball courts, a geosynthetic reinforced retaining wall, and an approximately 400 foot long elevated pedestrian bridge.

Duffield Associates provided geotechnical evaluations for the proposed new dormitory buildings and pedestrian bridge.  Geotechnical challenges at the site included moderate sloping topography located within the upland Piedmont Geologic Province characterized by underground boulders, rock ledges and massive rock.

Our construction staff provided review during the placement and compaction of structural fill, placement of reinforced concrete, construction of masonry walls, placement of precast concrete planking, and construction of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls and pavement areas.  In addition, we routinely provided recommendations regarding groundwater control and the removal of miscellaneous fill, rock, and other variable conditions encountered during construction.
