Shone Lumber Floodplain/Floodway Evaluation and Mitigation Project Wins Award

Shone’s Stanton facility, situated along the White Clay Creek, had been subject to repeated, sudden, short-event flooding since the early 1970s.  Duffield Associates provided a full range of professional engineering services, from initial flooding analysis and grant application assistance, to final design and construction review.  This project was awarded the American Society of Civil Engineers – Delaware Chapter Small Project of the Year.  Read more

Gustine Lake Interchange

As part of a $20.2 Million ARRA project managed by PennDOT, Duffield Associates assisted the project team with the design of micropile foundations for two new bridges. The interchange project includes the replacement of four structurally deficient bridges, the removal of a fifth bridge, and the realignment of ramps to create a new signalized intersection.  Read more

Lightship Overfalls Final Port


The Lightship Overfalls (LV118) was built in 1938 and is one of 7 survivors of the 179 lightships that marked the U.S. waterways over a 163 year period.  In 2001, the non-profit Overfalls Maritime Museum Foundation was formed to purchase the Overfalls from the Lewes Historical Society in order to restore the lightship and to provide tours allowing public access to an important piece of U.S. maritime history.  Duffield Associates was selected to assist the Foundation in completing the restoration of the Lightship by evaluating the site conditions and conceptualizing site configurations to optimize the final port for LV118. Read more

Cumberland Geoscience Consultants’ Name Changes - Duffield Associates' Carlisle, Pennsylvania, subsidiary, Cumberland Geoscience Consultants (CGC), is now known as Duffield Associates, Inc. CGC was acquired by Duffield Associates in 2007 and has grown to include the full range of Duffield Associates' services.

 

The New Draft Jurisdictional Guidance - The buzz is ongoing about the Draft Guidance on Identifying Water Protected by the Clean Water Act (Draft Guidance) that was placed on a 60-day comment period on May 2, 2011.  The Draft Guidance represents the first significant effort by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to regain a perceived reduction in the limits of Federal jurisdiction under the authority of the Clean Water Act (CWA).  In an effort to provide an abbreviated critique, we offer our thoughts on why this document was created and attempt to touch upon the jurisdictional implications and their impact.

 
 

Garry L. Brennan, P.E., S.E.O., joins Duffield Associates - Garry L. Brennan, P.E., S.E.O. has joined Duffield Associates’ Carlisle, Pennsylvania office as a Senior Project Manager.  Mr. Brennan has twenty five years of experience in civil engineering projects including utility design, storm sewer and stormwater management projects, erosion and sediment control, permitting, construction management and project administration.  He will have design and management responsibility for civil and water resources projects.

 

Green Infrastructure: Rain Gardens - Green infrastructure strives to incorporate non-structural facilities that mimic natural processes to recharge groundwater, preserve base flows, moderate temperature, and protect hydraulic stability. Green infrastructure techniques present pollution control methods based on the known benefits of natural systems. These systems provide multiple layers of pollution reduction that use soil and vegetation to trap, filter and infiltrate stormwater.

 
 

Stream Stabilization Article is Published. - Doug Janiec, a senior natural resource scientist, wrote an article “Modifying Traditional Stream Stabilization Techniques Based on Project Needs: Tweaking the traditional design tool box”  that was published in  March/April 2011 issue of  Land and Water Magazine.  His article provides a stream restoration design approach that defines the problem and identifies the path towards a solution.  His article takes a more "functional-needs" approach rather than relying on a set of standard restoration techniques.  The article can be viewed by going to www.landandwater.com or clicking here.

 
 
 

Duffield Associates Wins Army Corps Contract
Duffield Associates was recently awarded a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Philadelphia District contract.  This one-year Indefinite Delivery Contract, with options for up to two additional periods, is for geotechnical and geo-environmental technical services.
