Duffield Associates Celebrates 35th Anniversary
December 14, 2011 - Duffield Associates celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.

"A company's 35th year in business is a milestone event and ours is particularly momentous.  We are among a very few mid-sized consulting engineering firms founded during the last 35 years which has not been acquired by or merged with another firm.  Our longevity and continuing success is a tribute to our founding vision and especially to the dedication, hard work and client service ethic of our professional staff both present and past," says Guy Marcozzi, P.E., the firm's President.  "We have a great team and are optimistic about our future," Marcozzi says.

The company started with two employees in 1976 by founder James F. Duffield, P.E. in Newark, Delaware.  In 1980, the company moved into a farmhouse in the Pike Creek Valley.  As the company grew, it rebuilt and expanded an historic barn on its office campus.  Today the firm’s landmark Wilmington campus is comprised of three buildings.

Duffield Associates’ Projects Win Awards
May 13, 2011 - Two of Duffield Associates’ recent projects won awards.  These awards recognize engineering achievements which demonstrate ingenuity while providing significant public benefit.

The first project “Sunday Breakfast Mission Brownfield Redevelopment Project; A Mission for the Community” won the Conceptor Award from American Council of Engineering Companies – Delaware.  This project showcases the effective partnership between a non-profit community services organization, state regulatory agencies, Duffield Associates, a construction manager and the building trades.  This diverse team cooperatively tackled a property burdened with environmental legacies of its industrial past, and successfully managed the financial, logistical and technical challenges facing this Brownfield redevelopment project.  This project transformed an environmentally-challenged property into a state-of-the-art Women and Children’s Shelter; dramatically expanding the Sunday Breakfast Mission’s capability to provide shelter, rehabilitation and training to the local community.

The second project “Lumberyard No Longer Hammered by Flooding” won the Outstanding Civil Engineering Small Project Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers, Delaware Section.  On this project Duffield Associates conceived and designed a flood proofing project for the Shone Lumber Company’s sprawling, flood-prone showroom/warehouse facility in Stanton, Delaware.  Additionally, Duffield Associates: assisted in preparing and applying for a FEMA flood-proofing grant; conceived specially designed flood “gates” to protect 11 overhead and personnel doors; provided engineering/permitting and preparation of construction drawings and specifications; and, provided construction management services.  Using a number of innovative approaches to integrate flood wall construction with building elements, Duffield Associates achieved a cost-effective solution which was implemented while not disrupting Shone’s ongoing retail and shipping operations.

The company that met the most criteria in each category won a certificate for that category. In the event of a tie, the Green Building Award is given to the submission that won the most overall categories.

This building, designed by Homsey Architects, features numerous sustainable elements including the use of day lighting, space for recycling, a bioretention facility for stormwater runoff, and low emission interior materials.
