Vorelco
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Duffield Associates was retained by Vorelco to provide value engineering
for a proposed 42,000 square foot post-production automobile preparation
facility at the Port of Wilmington in Delaware. This facility, which
prepares and modifies imported automobiles for dealers in the United
States, had to be constructed on a fast track design and construction
schedule within tight budgetary constraints.
Due to the presence of approximately 100 feet of soft compressible
soils beneath the proposed site, a previous design of the facility
prepared by another engineer had recommended construction of a pile-supported
foundation system. After reviewing available information and performing
supplemental investigations, Duffield's team of geotechnical and structural
engineers designed a method of stabilizing the subgrade to allow this
almost one acre structure to "float" over the underlying
soft soils. This innovative design, utilizing cement stabilized fly
ash and crushed stone, eliminated the need to constructed five hundred,
100-foot long piles and associated pile caps.
Because of the cost and time savings realized, the Vorelco project
was successfully constructed well within budgetary and scheduling
constraints. The Duffield design team's recommendations resulted
in a cost saving to the owner of over $1 million and allowed acceleration
of the project's construction schedule by over two months. This
design received the Grand Conceptor Award at the Consulting Engineers
Council of Delaware's Engineering Excellence Design Competition.
