RESTORATION PROJECT GIVES NEMOURS DAM
A NEW LIFE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Located on the Nemours Golf Course of the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington,
Delaware, the Nemours Dam impounds Husbands Run, forming a reservoir.
Constructed in 1931 to provide water for the fountains of the du Pont
family's Nemours Estate, the dam continues to supply these fountains
but now primarily serves as a source of irrigation water for the country
club's golf course. DuPont retained Duffield Associates to perform
a study of the structure because of concerns regarding structural
integrity of the 40-foot high dam and the need to meet increasing
irrigation demands. Duffield Associates' successful restoration of
the Nemours Dam and Reservoir received honors at the Consulting Engineers
Council of Delaware's Engineering Excellence Competition.
During the initial phase of the study, Duffield Associates reviewed
the existing conditions and researched the structure's original
construction. The second phase of the project evaluated environmental
and regulatory aspects of sediment removal, site geology, reservoir
hydrology, dam stability, and structural integrity. The fast track
implementation of Duffield Associates' recommendations required
removal of the accumulated sediment and restoration of the gravity
and buttress dam.
In order to minimize interference with golf course operations,
the project team drained the reservoir and excavated the sediment
during the fall and winter.
The successful and cost-effective restoration of the Nemours Dam
and Reservoir preserved a landmark structure that typifies the du
Pont family's influence on the landscape and architecture of Delaware.
